N.B.: a given school may include two cycles or more. The classification mentioned above accounts for the highest cycle.

b.      Foreign language:

§         Learning a foreign language is obligatory starting from the pre-elementary cycle.

§         The foreign language could be either French or English, and it carries the same load as the national language (Arabic).

§         59.4% of schools teach French as the first foreign language, 19.6% teach English as the first foreign language, and 21% teach both French and English, one acting as the first foreign language and the other as a second foreign language (starting from the intermediate cycle).

c.       Students:

Total number of students enrolled in general education in Lebanon in 2000/2001 was 891,520 students (note that the total Lebanese population is estimated at 3.5 million)
